santo domingo

in 1496 Christopher Columbus and Spanish conquistadors landed on an island
named it Hispaniola
robbed the native Taino people of their land
and raped their women
they settled in this space by the sea
making it the first European city in the Americas
the buildings remain
and today the "Zona Colonial"
is home to yellowed stone walkways and palm trees
Christopher's son, Diego's palace
and hordes of tourists
please watch your purse
and let's walk through the 16th century Caribbean

for those of you who don't "habla español"
"La Zona Colonial" means The Colonial Zone
and "El Niño" means The Niño
